Is your boss HTML5 compliant?

It’s universally accepted that there’s a big difference between managing and being a manager. Just like HTML5, the search results for the best manager are being found wanting, so here are some things that can be translated from tech language into management must-have-s:

  1. Web workers – an HTML 5 compliant manager needs to be able to carry multiple threads and projects without giving blank stares when talking to underlings. Regardless of how many projects wait on the back burner, the manager must be 100% plugged into the present. Setting time-outs and reminders for other tasks is perfectly OK.
  2. Video element - ensure that employees have access to face-to-face meetings without having to jump through hoops, install plugins and so on. It’s still the most efficient (and productive) form of communication.
  3. Canvas – the modern manager should allow employees to draw their ideas in real time and not require extensive, standardized documentation for small items.
  4. Application caches – the manager will outfit her or his employees with all the knowledge and tools necessary to do their job well between meetings. This information is also to be retained by managers, thus making status updates more of a synchronization issue.
  5. Geolocation – the HTML 5 compliant manager will let the team know where she or he is at all times, as well as know where her team is.
